Why Your Brain Is The Key To Change

Change of any kind is often done by consciously focusing on doing something different. But that’s not so easy when you’re trying to make your brain do something it’s not familiar with.

This is why understanding and working with your brain is the key to change – without getting your brain on board and working with you, change will be extremely hard.

Most helping professions approach change work from the wrong perspective – they simply weren’t provided this information during their training, and some of it isn’t readily known or practiced in mainstream medical awareness.

A Holistic Life Coach focuses on aligning the mind, body and emotions by breaking old patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving to arrive at a new – and desired – outcome.

In other words, we don’t encourage talking over and over about the past. We encourage you to learn from it and move forward.

We don’t just ask powerful questions and allow space for the client to witness his or her own answers (known as meta-cognition)… we also educate our clients on how their mind plays tricks on them, and how our brain stores and recalls information that highly influence our unconscious reactions to change that doesn’t feel familiar.

Holistic Life Coaches understand the emotional and neuronal connections in the mind and the brain.

When memories are formed they are accompanied by emotions. And those experiential emotions inform our interpretation of what the event meant to us for years to come.

The meanings that we hold in our mind can easily elicit our stress response and block us from moving forward when we are challenged to change – it’s the brains instinctive attempt to keep us ‘safe’ in our comfortable reality.

Safe is familiar. Brain patterns strengthened over a lifetime of repetition are familiar. Change is not familiar.

The key here is that change must be made in such a way that gradually introduces itself to the brain as a potentially familiar way of thinking, feeling and behaving.

This takes conscious, deliberate action over time in order to replace the old wiring and create a new nerve cell connections.

Simultaneously, the underlying beliefs that created the original patterns need to be challenged so they can lose their grip in favour of the new and preferred goal.

This means taking into account:

– past programming/conditioning,
– interpretation/perspective of their past experiences, and
– the meaning and beliefs they hold within their subconscious mind.

This exploration allows you to uncover the neuronal thinking patterns embedded in the brain – the electrical firing and wiring of nerve cells caused by repetitive patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving.

Until the underlying beliefs driving these patterns are uncovered, any conscious change is short-lived. Which is why ignoring the brain’s involvement and necessity in the change-process is quite negligent.

Willpower only lasts so long, and emotions are a powerful driving force for change.

If you don’t understand the relationship between the brain and your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, any change will be temporary and frustratingly short.
