Have you ever noticed how certain songs help you settle into work, while others make it almost impossible to concentrate?Music doesn't just influence what you hear. It also influences your brain, nervous system, emotions and attention. The right music can help create an internal environment that's more conducive to learning by reducing stress, improving motivation and making it easier to sustain focus. The wrong music, however, can compete for your attention, overload your working memory and make studying far less effective.
Like most things related to the brain, there isn't a universal playlist that works for everyone. Your ideal study music depends on the type of task you're doing, your personality, and even how regulated your nervous system feels on that particular day.
Here are some evidence-informed guidelines to help you create a study playlist that genuinely supports your learning.
Different types of studying place different demands on the brain.
If you're reading complex information, writing assignments or trying to learn something new, your brain is already using significant language-processing resources. Music with lyrics can compete for these same resources, making it harder to comprehend and retain information. This is certainly the case for me!
For deep concentration, instrumental music is generally the better choice. If you're completing repetitive tasks, organising notes or revising material you already know well, you may find that music with lyrics is less distracting.
Rather than asking, "What music do I like?", ask yourself:
"What music helps my brain stay focused on this particular task?"
Your ability to learn is closely linked to your nervous system state.
If you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious or mentally scattered before studying, calming music can help reduce physiological arousal and make it easier to settle into focused attention.
Many people find benefits from:
• gentle classical music
• soft piano
• ambient electronic music
• lo-fi instrumental beats
• slow acoustic guitar
• meditation music
The goal isn't simply relaxation. It's helping your nervous system move into a state where concentration, curiosity and learning become more accessible.
Classical music has long been associated with studying, and for good reason.
Its predictable rhythms, lack of lyrics and relatively low complexity can help reduce distraction while maintaining mental engagement. Listening to enjoyable music may also stimulate dopamine release, which contributes to motivation, reward, attention and learning.
That doesn't mean classical music is the only option. Many people study just as effectively with cinematic soundtracks, jazz, instrumental world music or carefully selected ambient playlists.
The most effective music is often the music that fades into the background rather than demanding your attention. It should complement your study state, not dictate it.
Sometimes the best study soundtrack isn't music at all.
Natural sounds such as rainfall, flowing water, ocean waves, wind through trees or birdsong have been shown to reduce stress and improve mood while supporting cognitive performance.
When we're less physiologically stressed, the brain has more capacity available for attention, memory and problem solving.
If music feels distracting, try experimenting with nature sounds or white noise instead. You may find they provide just enough sensory input to help you remain focused without pulling your attention away from your work.
We all have songs that instantly transport us back to a particular memory or make us want to sing along. Unfortunately, that's exactly why they often make poor study companions.
Music that evokes strong emotions or familiar memories activates networks involved in autobiographical memory and emotional processing. Instead of concentrating on your textbook, your brain begins replaying memories, anticipating the next lyric or imagining you're at a concert (I go to all three!).
If you know every word to the song, save it for your study ‘break’ and not your study ‘block’.
Louder isn't always better. Moderate or low volume generally provides enough background stimulation without overwhelming your attention.
If you notice yourself focusing more on the music than your study material, turn it down or choose something less stimulating.
Your playlist should support your concentration, not compete with it.
Instead of creating a playlist that lasts for hours, aim for around 40–50 minutes.
When the playlist finishes, use it as a cue to stand up, stretch, hydrate and give your brain a short break before beginning another focused study session.
Research consistently shows that our attention naturally fluctuates throughout the day. Regular breaks help reduce mental fatigue, improve creativity and support memory consolidation.
Think of your playlist as a built-in study timer.
One of the biggest misconceptions about study music is that there's a perfect playlist for everyone. There isn't.
Some people focus best in complete silence. Others need gentle background music. Some find lo-fi beats ideal, while others prefer rainfall or instrumental film scores. The key is to become curious about your own brain.
Notice how different sounds affect your:
• concentration
• stress levels
• motivation
• ability to remember information
• mental fatigue
Your most effective study playlist is the one that helps you stay engaged without demanding your attention.
Music isn't a magic solution for learning, but it can become a valuable study tool when used intentionally.
The best playlists don't simply entertain you. They help regulate your nervous system, minimise distractions and create an environment where your brain can focus, absorb information and retain what you've learned.
So before your next study session, spend a little time creating a playlist that's designed to support your brain, instead of distract it.
